SUMMARY:The Girl Who Dreams Beyond Barriers
DESCRIPTION:PACEY Award winner Suraya Mohammadi shares her story of fighting for peace and empowerment for Afghan girls in this online lunchtime lecture \nFor our International Women’s Day lecture we will be joined by Suraya Mohammadi to hear about her work advocating for peace and gender equality. \nSuraya is an 18-year-old activist and women’s rights advocate from Afghanistan\, and is currently living in Pakistan. \nShe is the founder of Safiran-e-Sloh (Youth Peace Ambassadors Group)\, winner of the Wilson Hinkes Peace Award in 2024\, and was recently awarded the PACEY Award by the Basel Peace Office. \nSuraya’s project Safiran-e-Solh is a “youth-led initiative that supports Afghan refugee girls and women through education\, personal development\, and advocacy for equal rights. Originating in Afghanistan and now based in Pakistan\, the project includes weekly meetings\, literacy education\, mentoring programs\, and collaborative projects that empower Afghan girls and young women to become active change-makers in their communities.” (Basel Peace Office) \nThis event will be hosted by Interfaith Scotland on Zoom. \nBackground: Gender inequality in Afghanistan\nLast year UNESCO said\, “Four years ago in Afghanistan\, on August 15\, 2021\, the Taliban launched their grim campaign to erase women from public life. Since seizing power\, they have implemented more than 70 decrees violating the rights of girls and women — especially their right to education. \n“Today\, Afghanistan stands out tragically as the only country in the world where secondary and higher education is strictly forbidden to girls and women. Nearly 2.2 million of them are now barred from attending school beyond the primary level due to this regressive decision.” \nBooking information\nPlease book your ticket on Eventbrite. You will be sent a Zoom meeting link in the confirmation email.

SUMMARY:Managing Difficult Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Want to learn how to manage difficult conversations? Join our free online workshop exploring tools\, approaches and facilitation techniques to support group work over challenging topics. \nAt every level it feels as though our societies are increasingly fractured.  At the national\, community and individual levels we observe division\, blame and dehumanisation.  The ability to fully hear and demonstrate our intention to understand each other is urgently needed\, yet very few of us feel confident in navigating heated discussions.  This session would explore tools and approaches to help participants navigate conversations where there is deep disagreement\, and potentially high emotion.  We will consider ways of supporting us to better hear each other and stay in connection\, while authentically expressing our positions and beliefs.  \nFacilitators\nThe session will be facilitated by Sam Tedcastle\, Director and Senior Practitioner from the Centre for Good Relations and Jamie Spurway\, Religious Equalities Training Officer for Interfaith Scotland. \nSam has over twenty five years of experience in dialogue facilitation and conflict resolution across the United Kingdom. More recent projects have focused on applying civic meditation to build relationships around environmental issues and developing the role of mediative interventions for marches\, parades\, protests and demonstrations. \nJamie has been facilitating discussions around discrimination\, prejudice and inequality for over fifteen years.  In 2024 he co-facilitated a series of dialogues with Christian\, Muslim and Jewish participants over the impact of the situation in the Middle East on community relations in Scotland. \nBooking information\nTo book your place\, register via this Google Form.

SUMMARY:Understanding the Windrush Schemes
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to be working with the Windrush Engagement Team to share this important conversation. \nMany people have heard of the Windrush Generation – those who came from Commonwealth countries to help rebuild Britain after the war\, but not everyone knows about the difficulties some faced later in life\, or the government schemes now in place to help support people. \nThis free online session will cover: \n\nWhat happened during the Windrush scandal\nWho may be eligible for help through the Windrush Schemes\nHow individuals and families can access support\nWhy does this matter for faith and community groups\n\nFaith communities and local networks often play a vital role in supporting those who feel isolated or unsure where to turn. By learning about these schemes\, you can help spread awareness and ensure that anyone affected knows there is help available. \nTogether\, we can make a real difference. \nBooking information\nPlease book your ticket on Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Interfaith Conversation Café - Religious Calendars and Festivals
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging discussion on religious calendars and festivals. \nDo you know that there are approximately forty calendars still in use today\, including the Gregorian\, Jewish (Hebrew)\, Islamic (Hijri)\, Hindu and Pagan (Wheel of the Year) calendars. How many of them have you seen? \nCalendars share similarities in their purpose of organising time and marking significant dates\, but they differ in their methods and cultural significance\, and many calendars are tied to religious practices and festivals. \nWe invite you to attend our upcoming Interfaith Conversation Café for an interactive discussion on various aspects of religious calendars and festivals. We also encourage participants to bring along a physical calendar of your choice (if you have one). \nLight vegetarian lunch provided. \nThis event is planned by Interfaith Scotland as part of the World Interfaith Harmony Week 2026. \nOur Interfaith Conversation Café aims to encourage interfaith dialogue\, awareness\, and understanding by uniting people from different religious traditions\, spiritual\, or humanist beliefs in conversation over light refreshments. The conversation café will be a space where participants feel safe\, fully engaged\, and open to listening to and learning from each other. We hope to provide a platform that gives participants a chance to meet people from another faith or belief background\, or none\, in an informal\, fun\, creative\, and yet meaningful way. \nBooking information\nPlease book your ticket on Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Interreligious Encounters and Creative Practice: Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Our Faces of Faith exhibition will be displayed at the University of Edinburgh as part of the Interreligious Encounters and Creative Practice event. \nThe exhibition of creative practice begins on Monday 18th January and concludes on Thursday 19th February at the university’s Chaplaincy Centre. \nInterreligious Encounters and Creative Practice is an interdisciplinary event exploring how creative practices shape\, challenge\, and reimagine encounters and forms of coexistence between different faiths. Open to both academic audiences and wider communities\, the event invites contributors to reflect on the potential of creative media to interrogate dominant models of religious difference and to offer new perspectives on the lived realities of interreligious interaction\, particularly in sacred and contested spaces. \nOrganised by the School of Architecture\, Planning and Landscape at Newcastle University\, Religions for Peace UK\, and the University of Edinburgh (Social Anthropology & the Alwaleed Centre)\, the event aims to strengthen connections across architecture\, social anthropology\, art\, film\, performance\, cultural landscape studies\, and related fields. It builds on an initiative developed at Newcastle University in close collaboration with Religions for Peace UK\, as part of the broader project Religious Coexistence: Embodied Interactions in Sacred Sites and Faith Practices. \nThis event is generously funded by Religions for Peace UK and the Alwaleed Centre for the Study of Islam in the Contemporary World\, University of Edinburgh. \nBooking information\nYou can view the exhibition in the Chaplaincy Centre for free without booking a ticket. \nIf you wish to attend the symposium\, book your ticket on the University of Edinburgh website.
