Training: Handling the Hot Stuff

November 9 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

This 3-hour interactive online workshop explores tools and approaches to help you navigate conversations where there is deep disagreement, and potentially high emotion.

Tragically our world feels more divided and fractured than ever, with polarisation occurring over multiple topics, and in multiple sectors of society. At the national, community and individual levels we observe division, blame and dehumanisation. The ability to fully hear each other is urgently needed, yet very few of us feel confident in navigating heated discussions.

This session explores tools and approaches to help participants navigate conversations where there is deep disagreement, and potentially high emotion. We will consider ways of supporting us to better hear each other and stay in connection, while authentically expressing our positions and beliefs.

The tools and approaches will include: tools for slowing down and managing dysregulation; naming and building upon points of agreement; distinguishing intention and impact; understanding ‘cherished beliefs’; and facilitation tools to support people to better hear each other.

Please note: This session will cover some of the same approaches shared in the session on ‘managing difficult conversations; facilitated with the Centre for Good Relations on Monday 9th March.
